SquareHead’s new single “Petty in Pink” explores a man who is resentful about everything and revels in that bitterness rather than try to change it. Through heavy guitars, sorrowing solos, and catchy choruses, the music may be framing pettiness as something cool—or even badass. But, when the lyrics are taken at face value, the character may come across as deeply pathetic and emotionally immature. Yet from his point of view, he flourishes in such negative spaces, convinced that his pettiness is “pink”—and thus extravagant and harmless.
